Hannes Richter

In honor of World Water Day 2013, IIASA, the NAS, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Office of Science & Technology at the Austrian Embassy presented a public forum "Global Water at a Crossroads" with Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat, Director and CEO, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg, Austria.

Professor Dr. Kabat calls for a long-term systems approach to water research, new partnerships with the developing world, including a change in donor practices.

A topic of discussion was Water Futures and Solutions: World Water Scenarios, a new global initiative, coordinated at IIASA with public and private supporters worldwide, to help address these challenges.

Kabat was joined by a distinguished panel of leaders in research and policy of global water issues; Norman Neureiter, AAAS, Chuck Chaitovitz, US Water Parntership, Julia Bucknall, World Bank, and Bill Young, CSIRO Australia. The lecture was moderated by Aaron Salzberg, Special Coordinator for Water Resources in the Bureau of Oceans, Environment, and Science Affairs at the United States Department of State and a full video of the forum is available below.

The event, co-sponsored by IIASA, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Office of Science and Technology at the Embassy of Austria attracted over 100 participants.
