Anton Zeilinger Inducted Into Academy of Sciences

On April 27, 2014, Austrian Quantum Physicist Anton Zeilinger was inducted as a Foreign Associate into the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. He is one of 21 Foreign Associates from 14 countries who were elected in April of the previous year in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Membership in the Academy is a widely accepted mark of excellence in science and is considered one of the highest honors a scientist can receive.

Joining Konrad Lorenz, Peter Schuster, Walter E. Thirring, and Peter Zoller, Anton Zeilinger is the fifth Austrian scientist elected as a Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences. Previous elected members to NAS include the Austrian-American Angelika Amon in 2010.

Since 1999 Anton Zeilinger has been professor of experimental physics at the Faculty of Physics at the University of Vienna. Previously, he studied physics and mathematics at the University of Vienna, where he also received his Ph.D. He was then a visiting professor at several universities, including Munich, Berlin, Melbourne, Oxford, Innsbruck, Linz, Grenoble, MIT in Cambridge (Massachusetts), and the Collège de France in Paris. In 2004 he became director of the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI), a branch of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Since 2006 he has been vice chair of the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) and, since 2010, a board member of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ).

In March 2013 he was elected president of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
