From the Editor

Dear Readers,

This final edition of 2006 contains several interesting contributions on a wide range of topics. We are glad to present an interview with Eric Kandel, one of the most influential neuroscientists and recipient of the Nobel Prize, who talked with Austrian Information about his latest book, on the science of the mind, and his memories of Austria.

Other topics include the interesting business opportunities which Austria offers international companies and investors and the services provided by the Austrian Business Agency. Also, we look at the rebirth of the strong partnership between Austria and New Orleans a little over a year after Hurricane Katrina. In view of next year’s 50th Anniversary of the Santa Fe Opera, we present an article on its Summer Opera Festival that has become a tradition much like that in Salzburg.

Looking back on 2006, it was a very eventful year for Austria, particularly having assumed the Presidency of the European Union during the first six months. The many meetings of experts, working groups, councils of ministers and summit meetings presented exceptional logistical challenges and covered a wide range of topics. In October general elections were held. Finally, 2006 was marked by the 250th Anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the 150th Anniversary of Sigmund Freud. Cultural events surrounding these anniversaries were organized throughout the world.

I wish you a peaceful holiday season and a prosperous New Year!

Sincerely yours,

Wolfgang Renezeder
